Produced in partnership with Blackwing, this limited-edition pencil set depicts bolt patterns pulled directly from Calder's large-scale stabile Tripes (1974).
One of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is renowned for the invention of the mobile, whose suspended, abstract elements move and balance in changing harmony. From the 1950s onward, Calder increasingly devoted himself to making outdoor sculptures on a grand scale from bolted steel plate. These formidable stabiles and standing mobiles transform as they travel between settings, appearing in one way in a green landscape and another in an urban plaza. An ingenious design enables their relocation: square-faced bolts bind each of the plates together, allowing for assembly and disassembly. Calder intuitively determined the placements of these bolts as a crucial element of the overall composition.
