Although celebrated for his work in three dimensions, Calder was also a prodigious painter. His first abstract works of art were a series of small oil paintings from 1930, and he returned to this medium throughout his career, consistently transforming the canvas with the same bold forms and dramatic juxtapositions that appear in his sculpture. In Pinwheel and Flow, movement and energy are suggested through curving forms and widening black striations.
