Calder once wrote, “A mobile in motion leaves an invisible wake behind it, or rather, each element leaves an individual wake behind its individual self.” In The Forest is the Best Place, each element is uniquely activated by its environment, perpetually generating new compositions in space. Calder’s sketch of this cascading mobile was debuted in 1945 at Buchholz Gallery/Curt Valentin, New York.
